Brazil’s state-owned Petrobras ramped up security measures at refineries after learning of threats against its assets, company sources said on January 8.

The unnamed sources did not describe the exact nature of the threats. They told Reuters, though, that threats had been directed at oil-processing plants in Paraná, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states. Petrobras’ intelligence unit detected these threats while monitoring social media posts made by right-wing supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, they added.

The Petrobras insiders spoke on the same day that thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded Brazil’s main government buildings to protest against the outcome of the elections held last autumn. Bolsonaro never formally conceded after losing the election in the second round of voting to his leftist rival Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva last autumn, though he has acknowledged defeat and taken no steps to prevent the transition of power.
