Starbucks said that Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella had resigned from its board of directors after seven years in the role.

The coffee-shop chain said in a regulatory filing on Friday that the size of its board would be reduced by one.

Nadella said in a resignation letter that he would continue to be one of the company's biggest fans and cheer it on from the sidelines. He added that he has the utmost confidence in Chief Executive Laxman Narasimhan and the leadership team.

Nadella was named to the company's board in 2017.
