Our friends at The Ocean Cleanup are taking on the heroic task of cleaning the plastic out of our oceans. After 273 scale model tests, six at-sea prototypes, a comprehensive mapping of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and several technological iterations, they are ready to put the world's first ocean cleanup system to the test.
On Saturday, Sept. 8, The Ocean Cleanup take a critical step in this quest with the launch of System 001 from San Francisco Bay. System 001 is a 600m long, bow-shaped technology that will utilize wind, waves and current to begin sweeping the ocean surface and capturing loads of plastics. It will be towed more than 1000 nautical miles offshore to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
The GoPro Family is grateful for the entrepreneurial spirit and bravery of founder Boyan Slat and this remarkable team for fully sending it into this seemingly daunting task. We salute you, The Ocean Cleanup, and are cheering for your success.
To the GoPro community-please join us in celebrating this milestone and thanking these inventive human beings for thinking and acting big. A mission that, if successful, will have a massively positive impact on our planet.
How to participate/watch? The best way to stay in-tune with The Ocean Cleanup's progress is to follow them on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, where you'll find up-to-date info on their progress and live coverage of the launch-which will happen on Facebook and YouTube. We will also be embedding their live stream feed here on The Inside Line starting at 11:30 a.m. PT, where there will be a countdown until the stream officially starts at 12:00 p.m.
If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area, come cheer on the effort in-person (details below).
