Amazon.com announced on Tuesday that Adam Selipsky would be stepping down as CEO of AWS, its cloud computing division, on June 3, to be replaced by Matt Garman, an in-house executive.
The announcement was made official today by Andy Jassy, the CEO of the American online retail giant, who had himself headed up Amazon Web Services (AWS) before succeeding Jeff Bezos at the helm of the group in 2021.
Selipsky, who joined AWS in 2005, took over as CEO of Amazon's cloud branch at the same time, after a five-year stint at software developer Tableau.
We had agreed that if he accepted the position, he would hold it for a few years, and that one of his tasks would be to help prepare the next generation at management level", recalls Andy Jassy.
His departure comes at a time when AWS has recently returned to growth, posting sales of over $100 billion on an annualized basis.
Matt Garman, who first interned at Amazon as part of his MBA in 2005, joined AWS the following year to become one of its first product managers.
Since 2020, he has been in charge of AWS global sales, marketing, maintenance and professional services.
On the New York Stock Exchange, Amazon shares were down 1.3% on Tuesday morning in the wake of these announcements.
