DORTMUND (dpa-AFX) - The expiring contract of Borussia Dortmund's severely injured captain, Emre Can, will definitely be extended. BVB sporting director Lars Ricken announced this following Can's cruciate ligament tear. "We have enormous appreciation for Emre. That is also why we want to support him on his path to a comeback beyond June 30 and extend his expiring contract," Ricken told the Funke Media Group.

"Once Emre has come through the upcoming surgery, we will sit down with him regarding this," added the former national player. Can suffered the ligament tear during last Saturday's top match against Bayern Munich, which ended in a 2-3 defeat, and will be sidelined for several months.

Can became Marco Reus's successor in 2023

"It is an extremely bitter diagnosis for Emre and the entire club. He has been the undisputed captain of our team, not only under Niko Kovac but also under Nuri Sahin and Edin Terzic," Ricken continued. The 32-year-old Can took over the captaincy at BVB in 2023 from Marco Reus under then-coach Terzic./lap/DP/mis
