DORTMUND (dpa-AFX) - Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund has secured the long-term services of German international Felix Nmecha. The 25-year-old midfielder, who was previously considered a candidate for departure, has signed a new contract with BVB until 2030, the second-placed club announced. His previous deal was set to expire in 2028.
"He identifies completely with Borussia Dortmund and is a central cornerstone of our strategic squad planning," said Dortmund's Managing Director for Sport, Lars Ricken, according to a press release. "His contract extension is a signal of continuity and underscores our conviction that we will be successful together in the coming years."
BVB Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl praised Nmecha, stating that he benefits Dortmund's play and "consistently finds creative solutions even under pressure." Kehl added that he is convinced "his development curve will continue to point upwards in the future."
BVB still faces potential summer overhaul
Nmecha joined from Wolfsburg in 2023 for approximately 30 million euros and has become a fixture in defensive midfield under coach Niko Kovac. With this contract extension, the six-time international is expected to rise into the ranks of the squad's top earners.
Despite this, the BVB squad could face a significant overhaul this summer. The club recently announced that long-serving midfielder Julian Brandt will leave on a free transfer when his contract expires in the summer. Striker Serhou Guirassy is also considered a potential departure, while the future of defender Nico Schlotterbeck remains unresolved./lap/DP/mis
