LONDON, June 25 (Reuters) - Stellantis could halt its UK production unless the British government does more to stimulate demand for electric vehicles to help it comply with new EV mandates, the automaker's top UK executive said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference held by industry group the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) in London, Maria Grazia Davino told reporters that a decision on the future of the company's UK production would likely come in less than a year.

Unlike the European Union, whose mandated CO2 emissions reduction targets for automakers can be hit with a mixture of hybrids and EVs, from this year Britain has mandates in place for automakers to sell a minimum percentage of fully electric cars or face heavy fines.

"In the UK there will be consequences (of the mandates) for sure," Grazia Davino said. "Stellantis UK does not stop, but Stellantis production in the UK could stop."

Stellantis currently makes electric vans at its Ellesmere Port plant in Britain and has previously announced it will start making electric vans at its Luton plant in 2025.

Grazia Davino's remarks come a little over a week before British voters go to the polls to select a new government.

"Let me be clear, I want to keep the production in the UK," Grazia Davino said.

When asked how long it would be before Stellantis makes a decision on the future of its production in Britain, she said: "Less than a year." (Reporting by Giulio Piovaccari and Nick Carey; Editing by Gavin Jones and Jan Harvey)
