- SSAB aims to be the first in the world to market, in 2026, with fossil-free steel.

Already in 2025, SSAB will convert its first site in Oxelösund. This will reduce SSAB's emissions by 25% in
Sweden andSweden's emissions by 2-3%. -
In 2016, SSAB launched the HYBRIT initiative together with
LKAB andVattenfall . The goal is to create a fossil-free value chain for iron- and steelmaking, and to introduce an entirely new technology using fossil-free hydrogen instead of coal and coke to reduce the oxygen in iron ore. This means the by-product will be water instead of carbon dioxide. -
The initiative has the potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 10% in
Sweden and 7% inFinland . Besides which, the technology will contribute to lowering steel industry emissions inEurope and the world. - The global steel industry currently accounts for 7% of total global carbon dioxide emissions.
