Apple is losing yet another electric car executive. DJ Novotney, a vice president of hardware engineering, informed colleagues Friday of his departure. He will become senior vice president of vehicle programs at Rivian, the maker of electric SUVs and pickup trucks, reporting to chief executive officer RJ Scaringe.

Novotney, who has worked at Apple for nearly 25 years, was instrumental in the development of several generations of the iPod and iPhone. He also helped bring the Apple Watch to market.

He then became involved in Apple's project to develop an electric vehicle - a project codenamed Titan. He didn't stay there long. He went into developing future home appliances, including robotics and artificial intelligence.

What Novotney's departure to Rivian says about the development of the Apple Car is difficult to ascertain. According to recent reports, Apple still wants to bring an electric car to market, although no longer fully self-driving.

Tang Tan, Apple's vice president of product design for the iPhone and Apple Watch, is leaving the company next month to join LoveFrom, Jony Ive's design firm.
