The one-day strike by pilots and flight attendants has so far caused only a few flight cancellations at vacation airline Discover Airlines.

The Lufthansa subsidiary announced on Friday that three flights to Cancun in Mexico and to Fuerteventura and Tenerife in the Canary Islands had been canceled for the morning. In addition, a flight to Windhoek was canceled due to a technical defect. The exact effects of the industrial action are still unclear, but all short-haul flights will either be operated by Discover Airlines itself or taken over by partner airlines. The aim is to get passengers to their destination. The pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) and the cabin crew union UFO had announced a strike from 00:01 on Friday until 23:59.

According to Discover, around 20 flights from Frankfurt and ten from Munich were planned to be handled for Lufthansa. Discover Airlines has returned the flights from the Bavarian capital to its parent company on a so-called "wet lease". Discover offers long-haul flights and flights in Europe from Frankfurt and Munich with a fleet of 24 aircraft.

At issue are collective agreements for around 400 pilots and a good 1,200 cabin crew. "A negotiable offer has not yet been made," said a spokesperson for the pilots' union VC. The union had declared the negotiations on the first collective wage agreement to have failed in January. In a ballot, almost 96 percent of members voted in favor of strike action. The flight attendants have not yet received an offer from the employer, explained Harry Jaeger, head of the collective bargaining department at the cabin crew union UFO. In addition, there are no negotiation dates.
