Tokyo, June 8, 2021―In the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) led by Facebook, Inc., KDDI completed the preparation of hardware and software requirement specifications for next-generation high-capacity Disaggregated Distributed Backbone Routers (DDBR) in April 2021 [1]. This allows partner vendors to develop the DDBR that can perform processing at 614.4 Tbps (max), which is about three times faster than existing routers, contributing to the building of 5G facilities at telecommunications carriers.

As the co-chair of Disaggregated Open Routers (DOR), a new sub-group in the TIP Open Optical Packet Transport (OOPT) project group established in March 2020, KDDI has been promoting the development of technologies for handling routers as whiteboxes [2] in carriers' backbone networks [3].
Recently, DOR has designed an architecture for next-generation high-capacity DDBR, to respond to 5G traffic, which is expected to increase rapidly because everything including IoT and connected cars will be connected to networks. Aiming to commercialize the DDBR in about 2022, DOR contributes to the building of 5G facilities at carriers that are required to respond to 5G's high traffic, in cooperation with development vendors.

Characteristics of next-generation high-capacity DDBR

- It is possible to easily expand capacity by adding a packet forwarder whitebox
- It is possible to process high-capacity transmissions at 614.4 Tbps (max) by combining multiple packet forwarder and fabric whiteboxes
- It is possible to couple with flexible hardware and software without being bound by development vendors

KDDI will actively lead global DOR activities in the future, and promote the standardization of TIP's official next-generation high-capacity DDBR while working together with overseas carriers, to contribute in an ongoing manner to the sustainable growth of our society by handling ever-growing traffic.
