At the AUSA annual meeting and exposition, a military trade show taking place in Washington D.C. on October 9-11, 2017, Jenoptik will showcase an air-cooled 600-ampere alternator for the first time.

For around five decades, Jenoptik has been supplying tried-and-tested, liquid-cooled custom alternators for energy systems with different capacities. The AUSA exposition will be the first time the company presents a modular air-cooled alternator with a capacity from 400 to 600 amperes. This generator marks the start of Jenoptik's plans to offer an alternator product line with a continuous capacity range from 200 to 1,000 amperes. With global customer service, this product line will offer the complete package.

The modular design of the new 600-ampere alternator allows it to suit existing motor capacities, installation spaces, and harsh military environmental conditions perfectly. Its open interface offers a standardized and yet precisely customized range of options in terms of belt-driven or direct drives, controllers, connectors, or fastenings. As a result, the alternator is extremely versatile and accommodates a number of military vehicle platforms with different and demanding energy requirements, such as those for defense, reconnaissance, logistics, or medical care.

Measuring 230 mm in diameter and 300 mm in length, the alternator is compact and weighs just 40 kg. The target mean time between failures (MTBF) of 6,000 hours is another reflection of this product's technical excellence.

The alternator was designed in collaboration with Ralf Jakubowski, a product designer from Ratingen, Germany, who has created other Jenoptik products in the fields of aerial rescue and traffic monitoring.

As an integrated photonics company, Jenoptik is active in the three segments Optics & Life Science, Mobility and Defense & Civil Systems.

The Defense & Civil Systems segment develops, produces and distributes mechatronic and sensor systems for civil and military applications. The portfolio ranges from individual assemblies, which customers integrate into their systems, through to complete systems and end products. The segment's areas of competence are energy systems, optical sensor systems, stabilization systems, aviation systems as well as radomes & composites. Top-quality customer service ensures that the Jenoptik products and customer systems are supported over their useful lives, which generally extend over many years. The mechatronic products include diesel-electric gensets, electrical machines such as alternators, electric motors or converters, power electronics, heating systems and control units as well as lift systems and rescue hoists. They are used in drive, stabilization and energy systems for military and civil vehicles, rail and aircraft equipment. The sensor systems include infrared camera systems and laser rangefinders which are primarily used in automation technology, as well as security technology and military reconnaissance.
