InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ: IDCC) today announced a collaboration with Spectrum Bridge to develop Dynamic Spectrum Management technologies that intelligently harvest TV White Space (TVWS) and other under-utilized frequency bands. Spectrum harvesting opens new blocks of radio waves for use by Wi-Fi®, LTE, and other wireless systems, addressing the ever-growing demand for wireless bandwidth. InterDigital® and Spectrum Bridge are jointly planning Dynamic Spectrum Management technology demonstrations at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona. Both companies will preview part of this demonstration at the First Commercial White Spaces Deployment Launch Event, hosted today by the New Hanover County and the City of Wilmington, NC.

Spectrum Bridge has been the leader in delivering spectrum-sharing technology and was recognized by the FCC as the first live TVWS database service provider. InterDigital drives the development and standardization of advanced wireless and spectrum management technologies that deliver more efficient wireless networks and a richer multimedia experience. Complemented by the TVWS database service and advanced spectrum-sharing capabilities from Spectrum Bridge, InterDigital offers a complete Dynamic Spectrum Management solution that includes:

  • Allocation and aggregation of contiguous and non-contiguous frequency channels across licensed, unlicensed and TV White Space;
  • Database and sensing-assisted spectrum allocation;
  • Extension of legacy systems such as Wi-Fi® and cellular into under-utilized frequency bands.

"It is clear the pace of wireless innovation will put further pressure on the growing demand for spectrum", said Rod Dir, President and CEO of Spectrum Bridge. "Working with InterDigital highlights the value of integrating this spectrum-sharing technology with a wireless application to dynamically match bandwidth needs with the best available spectrum assets."

"Spectrum Bridge's spectrum-sharing technologies support InterDigital's vision of tomorrow's Network of Networks, characterized by the seamless integration of multiple communications networks that constantly connect people and things," commented James J. Nolan, Executive Vice President, Research and Development at InterDigital. "Intelligent and dynamic harvesting of prime spectrum, under-utilized by the primary licensee, is a practical approach for solving the bandwidth crunch."
