For one week a year, emerging designers and fashion icons crowd the Big Apple to display their latest collections. It's part of New York Fashion Week. But the runway isn't just reserved for the biggest luxury brands.

This year, Project #Cancerland and AnaOno, a small business that designs clothing and lingerie for women who have had a mastectomy, breast reconstruction or other breast surgery, offered 30 patients a chance to rock their latest designs on the catwalk and show how the right threads can empower anyone.

'Today, we do something bigger than fashion. Today, we show the world that women are strong, and that this disease does not discriminate. This is fashion with a purpose,' shared AnaOno founder Dana Donofree, who started the line after her own battle with breast cancer.

Many of the models in the AnaOno show have metastatic breast cancer, also called stage IV or the most advanced stage of breast cancer. One hundred percent of the money raised benefits METAvivor, an organization whose goal is to bring new therapies to market and extend the lives of those living with metastatic cancer.

Kristina Tripplett traveled from Houston, Texas to participate. 'The message I would like to send to women is to love yourself, embrace yourself, and have fun with it. You're living, so enjoy the fact that you're alive.'
