• In May the Board of Directors approved the 2023 Biodiversity Policy, which sets out the company's commitment to the protection of biodiversity, natural capital and ecosystem services in the development of our business strategy.
  • Endesa regards the protection of biodiversity as a priority in the development of its business strategy and is fully aware of the risks that its loss entails.
  • Through this Policy, Endesa aligns itself with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
  • The 2022 Biodiversity Conservation Plan ended with a total of 31 initiatives in operation, with projects undertaken throughout virtually the entire Iberian Peninsula, the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, and covering most of our business lines.

Endesa has reaffirmed its commitment to biodiversity, putting it at the heart of its business strategy. This May the Board of Directors approved the 2023 Biodiversity Policy, renewing the original 2020 version, in which it undertook to protect biodiversity, natural capital and ecosystem services in the development of our business strategy.

Endesa's 2023-2025 Strategic Plan, which focuses its activity on a business model that responds to the major challenges facing society including decarbonisation and electrification to combat climate change and progress towards energy sovereignty, is complemented with the 2023-2025 Sustainability Plan.

It is a sustainability plan which includes 130 measures aligned with the objective established by the Paris Agreements to avoid an increase of 1.5 degrees in the global average temperature compared with pre-industrial levels.

On 22 May every year International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated, and this year's edition is entitled: "From agreement to action: Build back biodiversity". The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) concluded on 19 December 2022 with the signing of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework which establishes specific goals and measures to halt and reverse nature loss from now to 2050.

Endesa regards the protection of biodiversity as a priority in the development of its business strategy and is fully aware of the risks that its loss entails. This is why the protection of biodiversity was already included in its first Environmental Policy approved and published in 1998. Through the current policy, Endesa aligns itself with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, committing itself to the following priorities:

The transparent analysis, evaluation and disclosure of the relationship between Endesa's activity, natural capital and biodiversity, including its impacts. At Endesa we analyse and evaluate the potential impacts of our assets on biodiversity, for which KPIs have been specifically defined to measure these impacts.

Actions necessary for the establishment of objectives and targets that ensure No Net Deforestation, No Net Loss of Biodiversity and, whenever possible, positive net gain. To this end, actions are carried out in the area of birdlife, water resources, forest resources, restoration of natural spaces and biodiversity tools.

Design specific action plans to minimise the potential impacts that may arise from the construction or operation of new projects, with the study of the existing biodiversity in the environment where Endesa facilities are located.

Implement new models and methodologies in business management of biodiversity, natural capital and ecosystem services that are applicable, and of interest for the achievement of sustainable economic growth.

Promote the integration of biodiversityby boosting related positive environmental and social impacts.

Highlight the importance of biodiversity, natural capital and ecosystem services, and awareness of the company's conservation activities, in addition to promoting the clear and verifiable increase of knowledge and awareness of biodiversity, collaborating with conservation bodies, NGOs, local communities, recovery centres, research centres, administrations, universities and experts, with the aim of conserving and protecting biodiversity.

The 2022 Biodiversity Conservation Plan ended with a total of 31 initiatives in operation, with projects undertaken throughout virtually the entire Iberian Peninsula, the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, and covering most of our business lines.

The Biodiversity Conservation Plan is one of the most important and distinctive aspects of our Biodiversity Policy because all of the actions included in it are completely voluntary, and far exceed mandatory environmental requirements.

The main lines of action of our plan in 2022 are as follows:

  • Restoring the physical environment on our land and at our facilities to increase their capacity for hosting biodiversity.
  • Managing the factors in the natural environment surrounding our facilities that contribute to improving the habitats of certain species.
  • Recognising our natural capital and the ecosystems it is home to, their value and state of conservation.
  • Preserving native species and controlling invasive species in and around our facilities.
