ABB reports that its collaboration with IGO Limited and Perenti has shown that an all-electric fleet of mining vehicles for the Cosmos Nickel project in Western Australia would be competitive with diesel vehicles.

The study shows that battery electric vehicles (BEVs) could match the productivity of diesel vehicles at a non-prohibitive cost, while reducing cooling and ventilation requirements.

This pre-feasibility study examined mine design for electric operations, fleet selection, power distribution and electrical infrastructure, as well as ESG impacts and CAPEX and OPEX costs.

The planned diesel fleet includes heavy trucks, loaders, auxiliary vehicles and four-wheel-drive utilities.
