TotalEnergies announces that it has started up its 18th biogas production unit in France, named BioBéarn and located in Mourenx in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region. With a maximum capacity of 160 gigawatt-hours (GWh), it will be the largest in the country.

This new unit, fed with organic waste, has begun injecting its first cubic meters of biomethane into the natural gas transmission network operated by Téréga. Biomethane is a renewable, low-carbon, locally-produced gas.

It will produce 69 GWh by 2023, then gradually ramp up to meet rapidly growing demand for biogas. It will recover 220,000 tonnes of organic waste and avoid the emission of 32,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
