Competition seems to be on the way for the Apple Vision Pro. Indeed, during their Galaxy Unpacked event in Paris, Samsung announced that it is working with Google on an XR headset. That device would be released "later this year" already.

In the news: There have been rumors of an XR headset from Samsung for some time, but now those rumors seem to be quietly becoming concrete. Indeed, Rick Osterloh, Google SVP of Platforms and Services, spoke about those plans during the Galaxy Unpacked event.

  • XR refers to any kind of technology where an additional digital layer is added to reality. So it is a kind of combination of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). Another name for it is "mixed reality.
  • This can involve replacing reality with virtual images (VR), something used mainly in the gaming world. In this, you are thus in a completely different world and no longer see anything of the real world.
  • Another possibility is adding certain extra things to reality (AR). We know this for example from Pokémon Go.

Samsung Flex Magic?

Not much information is currently known about this XR headset from Samsung and Google. Both companies would be working - together with Qualcomm - on a kind of XR platform. You could then use that with the XR headset they plan to bring to market together. Osterloh said that that device would already be available "later this year."

  • According to older rumors, this headset will be named Samsung Flex Magic, although there is no confirmation on that yet.
  • Earlier this year, there were also rumors of a price tag of barely $1,000 (920 euros). If true, this XR headset already looks like a great competitor to the Apple Vision Pro, which costs more than 4,000 euros.
