Roche Holding AG said Thursday that it has appointed a new chief executive officer, effective next March, and that the long-serving incumbent is in line to become chairman of the Swiss pharmaceutical major.

Thomas Schinecker will take the reins on March 15, 2023, Roche said. He is currently CEO of the group's diagnostics division.

Mr. Schinecker will succeed Severin Schwan, the company's CEO since 2008, Roche said. Mr. Schwan will be proposed as Roche's next chairman, succeeding Christoph Franz, who won't seek re-election to the board of directors at March's annual general meeting, the company said.

Mr. Franz has been Roche's chairman since 2014.
