Cairns Private Hospital invests in state-of-the-art surgical technology October 26, 2023

Far north Queensland is now home to new state-of-the-art robotic technology, with Cairns Private Hospital unveiling a surgical robot for use during knee replacement surgery.

The VELYS robot was first used at Cairns Private Hospital this monthand complements the hospital's ROSA Orthopaedic robot and da Vinci Xisurgicalrobot used for Urology, Gynaecology and Colorectal surgery.

Orthopaedic Surgeon and Medical Director at Cairns Private Hospital, Dr Chris Morrey, saidit was greatto see regional Australians provided withaccess to leading healthcare technology.

"Reducing the need to travel to a major city for robotic surgical procedures helps reduce stress for patients and allows them to recover close to home, with their support network," Dr Morrey said.

"Thefinancialcost for far north Queenslandersto constantly travel southfor appointments, scans and surgeriesalsocannot be overestimated. Having this technology in Cairnsis a wonderful thing for the local community."

Robotic technologyis designed tooffer a minimally invasive approach to surgery.

Equipped with advanced cameras and optical trackers, the new robot assistssurgeons by gathering patient anatomy data in real time. The robot is designed to aid the surgeon as they plan for and execute precise procedures tailored to a patient's specific anatomy.
