A consortium of Electricite de France SA, KEPCO and Kyushu Electric Power Co. have signed a $3.6 billion deal for a subsea transmission system project in the Middle East and North Africa region, EDF said Thursday.

The companies will work with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company and Abu Dhabi National Electricity Company PJSC, or TAQA, to develop and operate a high-voltage, direct current system.

The project will connect ADNOC's offshore production operations with cleaner and more efficient energy delivered through the Abu Dhabi onshore power grid, which is owned by TAQA's transmission and distribution companies, EDF said.

The project aims to reduce ADNOC's offshore carbon footprint by more than 30%.

Start of work is expected in 2022, with commercial operation to commence by 2025.

The consortium will hold a 40% stake in the project and will develop and operate it for 35 years alongside ADNOC and TAQA.
