In Germany, more than 95 percent of people live in a region where they can use mobile 5G networks. This is according to annual statistics from network operators Deutsche Telekom, Telefónica and Vodafone. With the availability of the fast 5G network, the volume of data transmitted is also increasing.

Statistics from network operators show that the 5G network is being used by more and more people in Germany. For example, almost twice as much data was sent with 5G in the Vodafone network this year as in the previous year. People are increasingly using video streams with their smartphones and tablets, said Tanja Richter, Vodafone's network boss.

Telefónica (O2) maintained its leading position: from January to November 2023, the O2 network transported 4.3 billion gigabytes of data. Deutsche Telekom transported just under 2.7 billion gigabytes in 2023, about ten percent more than the previous year. More than 2.4 billion gigabytes of data flowed into the Vodafone network, up 34 percent.

European professional soccer matches proved to be a major driver of cell phone usage last year: the Champions League match between FC Copenhagen and Bayern Munich on Oct. 3 resulted in a spike on the O2 network. Vodafone also set a record for the year with a Champions League match on Dec. 13 (Borussia Dortmund vs. Paris Saint-Germain).

For the coming year, network operators expect further growth from applications of artificial intelligence (AI).
