PORT ARTHUR, TX, September 17, 2014 -- This year the Sabine Neches-Area Community Advisory Panel (CAP) marks its tenth anniversary of strengthening bonds between BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals LLC and Total Petrochemicals & Refining USA , Inc. The CAP was established in 2004 to give community members an opportunity to meet monthly with management representatives from both plant facilities.

On September 3rd, the CAP participated in its annual tour of BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals LLC's Port Arthur plant, where members interacted directly with site leaders, observed new equipment and facilities and learned more about plant operations and programs.

"We appreciate the role that the Sabine Neches-Area CAP plays in raising awareness about our operations and helping enhance industry relationships with the local community," said Greg Masica, Vice President and Site Manager of BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals LLC. "The CAP process is a great way for local residents to learn more about what we do. In addition, it helps keep us in touch with the community's needs and concerns and ways we can improve our outreach and impact."

"I appreciate that every year CAP members are invited for plant tours because it shows that the facilities have nothing to hide," said Ron Bost, CAP member since 2006. "During our most recent tour of the BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals facility, I enjoyed visiting the training simulator in the control room and seeing how the operations staff uses it to practice different plant operating conditions. It was very impressive."

The Sabine Neches-Area CAP is composed of 12 to 15 community residents who reside in areas immediately surrounding the two plant facilities. They represent a cross-section of community and civic leaders and serve as advisors for plant representatives. The group meets monthly except for July and is facilitated by ERI Services, Inc., an independent, third-party consulting and training company.

During CAP meetings, site leaders from both BASF and Total are invited to give updates on plant operations and to address other issues chosen by the panel, including environmental performance, safety practices, emergency preparedness and community involvement. Meetings encourage two-way conversations and include time for questions and answers.

CAP members serve two-year terms and make recommendations for new panel members when terms expire. In addition to Ron Bost, members of the current panel are Anuj Amin, Randall Burt, Phil Chauvin, Brenda Duhon, John Freeman, Randy Haggard, Loretta Hebert, Blaine Judice, Don Smith, James Veasey and Alice Windle.
