Aviva PLC said Tuesday that it has appointed George Culmer as nonexecutive chairman, effective May 27.

Mr. Culmer, currently the company's senior independent nonexecutive director, brings extensive experience in insurance and broader financial services to the role. He is also a nonexecutive director of Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC.

The FTSE 100-listed insurer said Mr. Culmer will succeed Adrian Montague who will retire from the board on May 31.

Among other roles, Mr. Culmer was previously chief financial officer of Lloyds Banking Group PLC and CFO of RSA Insurance Group PLC, the company said.

Mr. Culmer's compensation will be 550,000 pounds ($668,181) a year.
