Donald Cheng

Mr. Cheng joined Washington Capital Ventures in October of 2002 and is a twenty-four year veteran of the global communications industry, having held senior engineering roles in early stage, venture-backed companies, as well as Corporate 100 companies.
Most recently, he held the position of Vice President of Engineering at Masergy Communications, leading the team that architected, designed, and implemented the company’s MPLS Backbone and IP telephony voice infrastructure.
Prior to that, he was the Vice President of IPTel Engineering at Zephion, the successor of Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers-backed Broadband Office.
Before joining Broadband Office in January of 2000, Mr. Cheng was the Director of Network Engineering at Worldcom/UUNET.
He also held the position of Director of Next Generation Switching Architecture.
Earlier roles at Worldcom included Director of Architecture, where he managed the architecture integration for the company’s acquisition of MCI, and Director of International Operations - MFS.
Previously, he held several positions at MCI from June of 1990 until July of 1995.
While Senior Manager of Voice Engineering, he led the joint MCI/British Telecom voice engineering team at Concert in a “best of breed” approach of integrating the two company’s networks.
He also held the titles of Senior Manager of Engineering Global Initiatives and Senior Manager of Planning.
He began his career in the telecommunications industry as Manager of Switch Engineering at ITT/Metromedia.
