Born in Norfolk, Virginia, he studied engineering and surveying under Andrew Talcott, and surveyed the Mississippi Delta with him in 1839, before joining the Texas Navy as a midshipman. Remaining in the Republic of Texas, he was appointed a surveyor for the Texas-U.S. boundary commission led by Memucan Hunt. In 1844–1846, he served as U.S. government mineral surveyor, mapping the rich copper country of the Keeweenaw Peninsula in Michigan and leasing out the government's mineral lands.

He returned to the new state of Texas during the Mexican–American War. Following the war, he served as chief surveyor of the US–Mexican commission which established the border after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. When the U. S. Commissioner, John Bartlett, a Yankee, gave away the Rio Grande's Mesilla Valley because of a map error, which had been disputed by the Mexican Delegation, the fiery Southerner Gray opposed the unacceptable compromise, and was removed from the commission (as surveyor, his signature was required for approval of the compromise). He was replaced by friend William Emory, but not before Gray had finished surveying the original U.S.–Mexico boundary from the Rio Grande, over the Black Range, down the Gila River to its junction with the Colorado River, and across the desert of southern California to the Pacific Ocean at San Diego. The U.S. Congress reviewing the case sided with Gray, but in the interim the President had sent James Gadsden to Mexico City to buy not just the Mesilla Valley of New Mexico but what is now known as the Gadsden Purchase from Mexico. Gray's claim in his survey report that it was the best route for a railroad influenced the Senate to approve the Treaty in 1854.

Andrew Mason grew up in Pittsburgh. At fifteen years old he launched a small delivery business, called Bagel Express: the mark of entrepreneurial spirit is felt very early. In 1999 he moved to Chicago in order to follow classes at Northwestern University and to obtain a Bachelor in music.

But after three months of classes, Andrew leaved for a good reason. He received an unexpected offer from his former boss available to finance Andrew’s ideas. These ideas will debouch into The Point, which will put the basis to Groupon. He had this idea when he discovered he was overcharged on his telephone invoice and he didn’t have any power of negotiation. Then he imagines a website that allows internet users to cluster in order to negotiate and buy at the best conditions.

Thank to a loan of one million dollar from Eric Lefkofsky, Andrew Manson can launch the platform The Point in November 2007. Alas, the website didn’t find huge success.

Quickly, Andrew brings Point’s business model up, he should change something. In November 2008, at 29 years old, he founded Groupon (contraction of the words “Group” + “Coupon”) an e-commerce site based on the concept of group purchasing. This time, the idea is to distribute vouchers already negotiated with small retailer. He sells them at its customers and he withdraws a commission of 50%. The website launched its first offer in October 2008, for a pizza at half price and then many offers are diffused in Boston, New York and Toronto.

Then the site knew an explosive growth. According to a report in Forbes and a report in the Wall Street Journal, Groupon should generate $ 1 billion dollars faster than any other company.

This growth is allowed by many young business acquisitions, for example Citydeal in May 2010, in France, Germany and U.K. Groupon buys ClanDescuento also present in South America in June 2010, then Qpod.jp in Japan in August 2010 and finally Darberry.ru present in Russia. Prior to these acquisitions, the company had bought Groupon mobile technology Mob.ly.

Andrew Thorburn Thompson (May 27, 1870 - April 20, 1939) was a military officer, editor, lawyer and a third generation political figure in Canada.

Thompson was born in Seneca Township and raised at Ruthven Park Estate, now designated as Ruthven Park National Historic Site; located just north of Cayuga, Ontario. His father, David Thompson was a businessman and political figure who sat in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada and then the Canadian House of Commons. His grandfather, also named David, had sat in the 1st and 2nd Legislative Assemblies for the United Province of Canada representing Haldimand County.

A lawyer and editor, he was elected to the House of Commons as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Haldimand and Monck in the 1900 federal election defeating former Conservative cabinet minister Walter Humphries Montague by less than 150 votes.

Due to redistribution, Thompson's riding was abolished and in the 1904 federal election, he ran for re-election in the redrawn district of Haldimand but was defeated by his Conservative opponent by less than 300 votes.

During World War I, Thompson was lieutenant colonel of the 114th Regiment composed of white and First Nations soldiers from Thompson's home region of the Haldimand County area.>

In 1923, he was chosen by the deputy superintendent general of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to lead a one-man inquiry into the disturbances on a Six Nations reserve and the demands by Cayuga nation hereditary chief Deskaheh for recognition of the rights of his people after he threatened to take his complaints to the League of Nations along with demands for an independent state under Article 17 of the League's Covenant. As Thompson had commanded Iroquois soldiers during World War I he was seen as a mediator who could be trusted by both sides. However, Thompson's [. Commission to Investigate and Report upon the Affairs of the Six Nations Indians issued a report] that recommended that the hereditary council that governed the reserve be replaced by an elected council thus depriving Deskaheh of his right to speak for the Six Nations. The new council was elected in October 1924.>
