For the third edition of CYSAT, the European event entirely dedicated to cybersecurity for the space industry, the European Space Agency (ESA) set up a satellite testbed.

The Thales cybersecurity team rose to the challenge, identifying vulnerabilities that would enable malicious actors to disrupt the operation of an ESA satellite.

The aim was to simulate attempts to take control of OPS-SAT, a nanosatellite used by the agency for demonstration purposes.

' The results of the satellite hacking exercise, the first of its kind in the world, will be used to reinforce the security of the satellite and its on-board applications. This can help improve the cyber-resilience of space systems, protect sensitive data and promote the long-term success of space programs '.
