A €120 million investment in the efficiency and sustainability of the area's electricity grid

TERNA: THE AUTHORISATION PROCESS FOR THE REORGANISATION OF THE ELECTRICITY GRID IN VAL FORMAZZA IN THE PROVINCE OF VERBANO-CUSIO-OSSOLA HAS BEGUN

The project concerns the Municipalities of Formazza, Premia, Crodo, Montecrestese,

Crevoladossola, Masera and Baceno

The project will allow for the demolition of approximately 60 km of existing high-voltage

overhead lines for a total of 225 pylons

Rome, 4 January 2022 - Following the launch, by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, of the authorisation process for the project to rationalise the electricity grid in Val Formazza concerning the municipalities of Formazza, Premia, Crodo, Montecrestese, Crevoladossola, Masera and Baceno in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Terna will publish the notice identifying the parcels of land potentially affected by the project.

The project, for which the Company will invest €120 million, involves the demolition of approximately

60 km of existing high-voltage overhead power lines for a total of 225 pylons, to be built upon completion of 76 km of new overhead power lines and 10 km of underground cable. The work will ensure greater efficiency of the area's energy transmission service and, as a result of the reorganisation of the existing grid, will make it possible to reduce the impact on the territory by power lines dating back to the 1940s-1950s that cross highly built-up areas.

The project, the result of an intense and profitable process of dialogue with the territory, is part of the larger plan for the reorganisation of the electricity grid in Piedmont as envisaged by the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2009 by Terna, the Piedmont Region and the Local Authorities, downstream of the construction of the Trino - Lacchiarella power line. In the Verbano- Cusio-Ossola area and, specifically in Val Formazza, the goal of this agreement was to resolve critical issues related to the coexistence between the electricity infrastructures and the valley floor.

To this end, starting from February 2011, within the framework of technical discussions involving Terna, the Piedmont Region and the municipalities concerned, the rationalisation projects for the existing grid and the related design solutions were identified. In August 2019, during the meeting convened by the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola Provincial Prefect, the need for the territory to integrate the existing project and to extend the reorganisation to the Municipalities of Crodo and Montecrestese emerged. Terna acknowledged the requests made by Local Authorities by elaborating new solutions, contained in the project currently under authorisation, which were approved by all parties involved during the subsequent technical round table held in September 2019.

The project documentation can be viewed at the relevant offices of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, the Piedmont Region and the Municipalities of Formazza, Premia, Crodo, Montecrestese, Crevoladossola, Masera and Baceno and written observations can be submitted to the aforementioned Ministry and, for information, to Terna, within 30 days of publication.
