TERNA: GREEN LIGHT FOR TWO NEW UNDERGROUND

CABLES IN SALERNO

The project involves the construction of two new lines over 5 km, which will promote the

decarbonisation of the port area in Salerno

Investment of around €24 million

Rome, 4 January 2023 - The Italian Ministry for the Environment and Energy Security has authorised Terna's project for the construction of two new 220 kV underground power cables that will connect the "Salerno Porto" primary cabin to the "Salerno Nord" primary cabin.

For the project, which also received the green light from the Campania Region, the Italian electricity grid operator has planned for an investment of around €24 million.

Terna will build two completely underground cables stretching over 5 km each. The routes of the new power lines will initially follow existing roads, side by side. They will then diverge before reuniting up to the entrance of the Porta Ovest tunnel, part of the Salerno Port Authority's project, which the cables will follow up to the Salerno Porto primary cabin.

The company will use underground cables with XLPE insulation, a highly efficient and sustainable technology.

The project is essential for adapting energy infrastructure to the development of the city of Salerno, while promoting the decarbonisation of the port area.

In order to ensure synergy between the Terna and tunnel projects, a technical round table was established involving the Municipality of Salerno (Department for Town Planning and Mobility), the Central Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority for Naples-Salerno-Castellammare di Stabia, the University of Salerno, E-distribuzione and Terna, with the aim of sharing and co-defining technical and management solutions. Said technical round table closed with a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the interested parties.

Terna, which manages around 4,000 km of high and extra-high-voltage lines in Campania, is rolling out its 2021-2025 "Driving Energy" Business Plan and will invest over € 1 billion in the region for the development and resilience of the regional electricity grid.
