Sunday 30 October, the hands of the clock go back one hour; at 03:00 a.m. winter time returns

TERNA: DURING THE 7 MONTHS OF DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME, THE

ITALIAN ELECTRICITY SYSTEM SAVED €190 MILLION

Consumption was down by 420 million kWh since 27 March. This is the equivalent of a 200,000

tonne reduction of CO2 emissions

Since 2004, around €2 billion and 10.9 billion kWh of electricity have been saved in Italy

Rome, 28 October 2022 - According to data provided by Terna, the company that manages the national transmission grid, during the 7 months of summer time the Italian electricity system benefited from lower consumption of 420 million kWh. This figure is equal to the value of the average annual requirement of approximately 150 thousand households, which results in financial savings of approximately €190 million. Positive effects also in terms of environmental sustainability: the lower electricity consumption, in fact, has allowed the country to decrease CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by about 200 thousand tonnes.

The financial savings have been calculated taking into consideration that this year, during the period of DST, which began on Sunday 27 March and will end on Sunday 30 October with the return of winter time (at 03:00 a.m. the clocks must be set back by 60 minutes), the average cost of electricity per kilowatt for the typical domestic user in the protected market (according to data from ARERA) was around 45 cents before tax.

From 2004 until 2022, according to analysis by the company led by Stefano Donnarumma, the lower consumption of electricity in Italy due to DST was overall around 10.9 billion kWh and has brought about, in financial terms, a savings of around €2 billion for its citizens.

Real-time data on the operation of the national electricity system can also be found on the Terna app, available on all app stores:
