Although the Company experienced supply chain challenges due to the lockdown inShenzhen during the first quarter, it achieved its plan revenue of$16.0 million . Shipments to customers in the security and surveillance market were more significantly impacted than shipments to customers in the automotive market. For the first quarter of 2022, security surveillance revenue was$6.5 million , a decrease of 21% as compared to the same quarter of 2021, but automotive revenue was$9.5 million , an increase of 51% as compared to the same quarter of 2021. The increased proportion of total revenue attributable to the automotive market resulted in increased gross margin as compared to the same quarter of 2021. For the first quarter of 2022, gross margin increased 4.4 percentage points to 57.4%. The manufacturing and shipping of the Company's products continues to be adversely impacted by the lockdowns in major cities inChina , most significantlyShanghai . The duration of the lockdowns currently is uncertain. In consideration of these challenges, the Company expects that second quarter 2022 revenue will be$17.0 million . The Company expects that gross profit in the second quarter of 2022 will increase to approximately$9.7 million . Additionally, the Company expects that research and development expense will increase by approximately$1.4 million and sales, general and administrative expense will remain flat as compared to the second quarter of 2021, resulting in operating profit of approximately$4.4 million . At this time, the Company is not making changes to its full year 2022 financial forecast and it does not expect any significant changes to its manufacturing capacity. The Company will begin shipping samples of its CMOS integrated sensor ("CIS") product in the third quarter of 2022. Note on non-GAAP financial information: The Company uses non-GAAP measures of adjusted income from operations and net income, which are adjusted from results based on GAAP to exclude certain expenses. These non-GAAP financial measures are provided to enhance the user's overall understanding of the Company's current financial performance and its prospects for the future. Specifically, the Company's management believes that non-GAAP results provide useful information to the Company's board of directors, management and investors as these non-GAAP results exclude certain expenses that management believes are not indicative of the Company's core operating results and can be impacted by factors beyond management's direct control, such as the market price of the Company's Japanese Depositary Shares. These non-GAAP results are some of the primary measurements management uses to assess the Company's performance, allocate resources and plan for future periods.
