SurePure, Inc. announced that it has teamed up with the University of Johannesburg to determine the efficacy of its Turbulator technology to combat the prevalence of mycotoxins in commercially available beverages in South Africa. Using its patented Turbulator technology, SurePure uses UV-C light to purify microbiologically sensitive liquids such as wine, fruit juice and milk. UVC light has shown efficacy in reducing the levels of mycotoxins and the SurePure technology appears especially promising in addressing the needs in South Africa.

There are indications that mycotoxins are prevalent in commercially available beverages in South Africa. A study by Dutton et al, 2012 of the South African dairy industry showed all milk samples from sample dairy farms were positive for aflatoxin M, while retail milk was also frequently contaminated.
