'Sunrise offers its customers the best mobile phone network in Switzerland, and with this network, business and private customers in Switzerland have access to one of the best mobile networks in the world. To keep it that way, we are breaking new ground again by acting on the Swiss Federal Council's report on future-ready mobile phone networks , well ahead of our competitors: By the end of 2018, we will remove the old 2G technology from our network and accelerate the expansion of 4G and 4G+ for our customers. The key thing to note here is that we will offer attractive upgrade options to our 2G customers and customized solutions to our business customers. These will allow them to benefit from the essentially 'defect-free' network we are working towards, with much better coverage and voice call quality. By increasing bandwidth and providing 4G coverage across 92% of Switzerland by the end of the year, we aim to set the Swiss quality standard for mobile calling and fast mobile Internet yet again,' explains Olaf Swantee, Sunrise CEO.

With its record-breaking score in the connect network test (issue 01/2017), Sunrise proved that mobile network performance depends on much more than total capital expenditure, and that network strategy is equally important. For example, rather than follow industry trends, Sunrise took a pioneering approach and forged new paths when rolling out its fourth-generation mobile network (4G), to benefit its customers. Most providers initially focused on high data rates and so expanded their 4G mobile networks by mainly using 1800 MHz spectrum. Sunrise, on the other hand, focused primarily on 800 MHz spectrum for its 4G network. 800 MHz and other lower frequency spectrum bands have clear advantages for full 4G coverage and reception inside buildings. Thanks to this clever technology strategy, customers are already benefiting from faster and more robust data connections today, even when signal strength is low.

The best network for Sunrise customers

Business and private customers are using more and more mobile services. Sunrise, always pushing to offer the very best service quality, will remove outdated 2G technology, which no longer meets today's quality standards, from its network, ahead of its competitors. Sunrise will start to notify its customers of the change in June, to allow them to benefit as early as possible from the attractive upgrade options on offer and business customers will receive assistance when making the changes to ensure that their solutions benefit from the very best network quality.

Introduction of mobile calling over 4G (VoLTE)

Sunrise is paving the way for mobile calling over 4G. With the launch of Voice-over-IP over LTE (VoLTE), which is 4G-based calling, Sunrise will continue to provide the best mobile phone services and full geographical coverage across Switzerland. 4G technology improves reception inside buildings and allows for faster call setup and fewer dropped calls.

With the launch of Wi-Fi calling this spring, Sunrise customers with compatible mobile phones can also make calls via any Wi-Fi hotspot in Switzerland. Wi-Fi calling offers better reception inside buildings that don't have adequate mobile network coverage because of their location or how they were constructed.
