G7 to condemn deepening Russia-N. Korea military ties at Italy summit

TOKYO - The Group of Seven leaders are set to strongly condemn deepening Russia-North Korea military cooperation at their summit in Italy later this week amid Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, a diplomatic source said Monday.

Citing a draft communique to be issued at the three-day summit starting Thursday in Fasano in southern Italy, the source said the leaders will also renew their commitment to "steadfast" support for Ukraine while voicing concerns about China's growing military assertiveness.

Near-complete Tokyo condo to be demolished for spoiling Mt. Fuji view

OSAKA - Major Japanese developer Sekisui House Ltd. said Monday that it will demolish a nearly completed condominium in western Tokyo, just weeks before transfer to purchasers, after nearby residents complained the building partially blocks the view of Mt. Fuji.

Sekisui House, based in Osaka, said it decided to take down the 10-story, 18-unit condominium in Kunitachi, built along a street known for the view of the iconic 3,776-meter peak, due to "insufficient consideration for the impact on the scenery."

Japan emperor thanks visiting Luxembourg crown prince for quake aid

TOKYO - Emperor Naruhito met with Luxembourg's Crown Prince Guillaume on Monday and thanked him for the financial support given by the European country following the major earthquake that hit central Japan's Noto Peninsula on New Year's Day, the Imperial Household Agency said.

The two spoke for about 20 minutes in what was their first meeting in around 10 years. They also discussed the emperor's 2012 visit to Luxembourg for the crown prince's wedding as well as the country's space exploration program.

N. Korean missile facilities updated to raise morale: think tank

WASHINGTON - North Korea has been refurbishing its ballistic missile operating bases, with a particular weight on replacing outdated housing and improving food availability, a U.S. think thank said Monday.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies, which released satellite images of three such bases in North Korea, said that the observed changes made during the past five years indicate "a concerted effort to continue improving the quality of life and morale of the Strategic Force troops and their families."

Japan to step up enrollment of foreign residents in pension system

TOKYO - The Japanese government will strengthen efforts to ensure foreign residents are enrolled in the country's public pension program by accessing relevant information during the migration process, sources close to the matter said Monday.

All foreign residents in Japan are required to enroll in the pension service either through self-registration by submitting an application or employer registration. However, some cases still slip through the system.

Japan, Philippines "2-plus-2" security talks set for July 8: source

MANILA - Japan and the Philippines will hold a security dialogue involving their defense and foreign ministers in Manila on July 8, a source from the Southeast Asian government said on Monday.

At the second "two-plus-two" talks since their launch in Tokyo in April 2022, the two countries are expected to sign a reciprocal access agreement to enable their defense forces to smoothly access each other's territory for exercises and other purposes.

Helicopter makes emergency landing in western Japan schoolyard

TOKYO - The transport ministry said Monday a helicopter operated by a private company made an emergency landing in a schoolyard in Aioi, Hyogo Prefecture, western Japan, without any injuries occurring.

The incident came nearly a month after a helicopter tourism flight by the company, Takumi Enterprise, ended with an emergency landing in Kumamoto Prefecture, leaving the pilot and two passengers injured.

U.N. Security Council backs Gaza cease-fire plan almost unanimously

TOKYO - The U.N. Security Council on Monday backed a U.S.- proposed cease-fire plan for the conflict in the Gaza Strip between Israel and the militant group Hamas in a resolution adopted in an almost unanimous vote.

In the 15-member panel, 14 countries voted in favor of the resolution calling on U.N. members to support the implementation of a cease-fire once it is agreed by the relevant parties, with only Russia abstaining.
