The 176-km Autopista al Mar 1 is one of the largest projects in Colombia's fourth generation of road concessions program

Colombia's National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) has awarded the Estructura Plural SAC 4G consortium, formed by Sacyr Colombia (37.5%), Strabag (37.5%) and Concay (25%), a $1 billion (roughly 900 million euros) contract to construct and manage the 176 km Autopista al Mar 1 for a period of 25 years.

The Autopista al Mar 1 is one of the largest projects in Colombia's fourth generation of road concessions program; it is located in the Antioquia department near the 202 km Corridor 5 between Puerta de Hierro - Palmar de Varela - Carreto - Cruz del Viso which Sacyr Concesiones was awarded last May.

Through the West Tunnel the Autopista al Mar 1 unites the municipalities of San Jerónimo and Santa Fe de Antioquia and continues to Bolombolo. The contract includes the construction of 41 bridges and 17 tunnels, improvements of the existing road, construction of a second stretch between Medellín- Santa Fe de Antioquia, the second phase of the 4.7 km West Tunnel, the repair of the Bolombolo-Santa Fe de Antioquia section and the opening of the road between Santa Fe de Antioquia and Cañasgordas.

Minister of Transport Natalia Abello said yesterday that this corridor is a crucial connection between Antioquia and the west of the country towards the Caribbean Coast. "Moreover, around 4,700 jobs in the area will be created during the construction phase of this project, which will energize the region's economy".The Minister added that the construction of this road will bring enormous benefits to the freight sector, because "it will reduce travel time between Medellín and Cañasgordas from three hours to an hour and 45 minutes, which represents massive savings in operating costs". "This project is particularly important for Antioquia, creating a wide, modern and safe highway that will connect Medellín with the Port of Urabá, improving the country's competitiveness and foreign trade", said ANI president Luis Fernando Andrade.

Last May, Colombia's National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) awarded a 100% Sacyr consortium a $275 million contract to repair, improve and operate a 202 km section of Corridor 5 between Puerta de Hierro - Palmar de Varela - Carreto - Cruz del Viso. Sacyr Concesiones will manage the road for a period of 25 years.

Sacyr Concesiones strengthens its position in Colombia with this project and enhances its presence in Latin America, where it already has 10 assets (a highway in Peru as well as six highways and a hospital in Chile). Sacyr Construcción also has a major project in process in Colombia after recently winning a contract to build the cable-stayed "Pumarejo" bridge over the Magdalena River in Barranquilla, at 2.28 km the longest bridge in Colombia and the country's largest public work with an investment of 223 million euros. In addition, Sacyr is responsible for the construction of two sections of highway: one from Cali to Buenaventura for 103 million euros and the road between the towns of Málaga and Los Curos in the department of Santander for 31.5 million euros..

This contract is in line with Sacyr's global strategic objectives for its core businesses of construction, infrastructure concessions, services and industry, increasing its market share and ability to face greater business challenges. Achieving these objectives will establish Sacyr as an international leader in the sectors and countries in which it operates.
