Renault announced on Tuesday that, in collaboration with the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), it has developed a novel materials architecture combining digital design and 3D printing.
The automotive group points out that this technology, based on additive manufacturing, could enable the design of adaptive and customizable components.
Applied in particular to seats, this process should make it possible to lighten on-board components by around 30%, while reducing their thickness.
The idea is to obtain, with a single material, performances in terms of comfort, cushioning and support that cannot be achieved with the usual materials (fabrics, foams, reinforcements, etc.).
With this system, the seat could even be shaped to the driver's morphology, explains Renault in a press release.
Last year, as part of their partnership, Renault and the CEA designed a very high-efficiency bidirectional charger for electric vehicles.
