POSCO ICT smart factory is once again evolving by converging digital twin technology.

Digital twin is a technology that predicts results in advance by simulating various situations by creating twins of objects in a virtual space.

It has the advantage of dramatically improving efficiency such as cost and time by testing new technologies or facilities in advance in digital twin environment before being applied to manufacturing sites and introduced into actual factories.

POSCO ICT plans to implement an autonomous production operation system that supports optimal decision making in the areas of operation, facility, quality, safety, and environmental management by incorporating 3D simulation, visualization, and control interface technologies into the currently operating smart factory system.

In particular, in the field of operation, it is possible to determine the optimal operating conditions of the most efficient facility through simulation supported by the digital twin environment.

In the quality field, it is possible to reduce the time and cost required for quality improvement by simulating the quality impact of changes in operating conditions in advance.

For facility management, pre-maintenance work through 3D modeling can be performed to shorten the working time, and a predictive maintenance system can be implemented in connection with facility abnormality detection model.

In addition, it is possible to visualize and simulate the location of field workers to implement safe sites by blocking risk factors in advance, and to derive optimal scenarios for carbon reduction by simulating energy usage and carbon generation by process.

POSCO ICT plans to first apply such digital twin-based smart factories to POSCO steel mills and expand their application to external production sites where their smart factory solutions are applied.

Meanwhile, POSCO ICT, which promoted POSCO Smart Factory, the first lighthouse factory in Korea, successfully completed the construction of smart factories in Hyosung Heavy Industries, Poongsan, LS-Nikko Copper, etc. based on the smart factory platform "PosFrame" applicable to continuous processes and mid-to-late long-range industries.

Digital Twin, which was used in the manufacturing sector, is gradually expanding its use to the public sector, including construction, logistics, energy industry, and urban operation.

Market & Market, a market research firm, expects the size of the global market related to digital twin to increase from 3.6 trillion won in 2020 to 55.4 trillion won in 2026.
