POLA MUSEUM ANNEX Presents

Yuji Nishijima: Zui-shou - Time Accumulation

From April 28, 2023 (Fri)

Pola Museum Annex (Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo) proudly presents sculptor Yuji Nishijima's first large-scale solo exhibition "Zui-shou - Time Accumulation" from April 28, 2023 (Fri) until June 4 (Sun).

Yuji Nishijima's works are created from hand-wound spirals of copper wire that are carefully connected together, one-by-one, taking form as a specific motif. The motifs include deer, elephants, and even yatagarasu (mythical three-legged ravens), all creatures with a connection to legends and myths. Nishijima has created many three-dimensional forms and installations for display both home and abroad. Each work is composed of many thousands of parts and assembling them all into a coherent theme takes a considerable amount of time, spanning days and months, and this depth of time can be felt in the works. These forms, reduced to the minimum necessary to convey the silhouette, give out a dazzling light, arousing a presence in the imagination that cannot be seen by the eye, much like the atmosphere that adorns the motif and the very scene around it.

This exhibition will feature three works, including a brand-new installation, and is titled Zui-shou meaning "auspicious omen." The image for this exhibition takes Nishijima's arrival at a god-like entity derived from his image of a bright omen or hope amidst the last few years of pandemic upheaval. It brings together the two monumental works of a phoenix and a dragon. Please come and enjoy in person the truly impressive atmosphere, sparkling in the silence.

Artist's Statement

I'm interested in the existence, the presence that people possess.

I perceive something filling the space and try to give it form.

I then recreate the space based on the thing given shape.

From the light that passes through this shape, I visualize the presence.

On the other hand, I also think about existence and presence from the point of view of the accumulation of time. I consider each and every part of copper wire as something that I spent my own time delicately bending and twisting into shape. By using that accumulation to give something shape, I am adding the concept of time to my works.

In forcing the visual presence and the world created from the concept of accumulated time to exist at the same time, I can create a double-layered structure within the space, and directly call into question the sensation of the phenomenon.

In recent years, in thinking about existence and presence, I use the motif of god.

Thus I came to think that this "god" is simply another word for what humans perceive as a sixth sense.
