Philip Morris International said it plans to spend $600 million over the next two years to open a manufacturing facility in Aurora, Colorado, that's expected to create 500 new jobs.

The maker of Zyn nicotine pouches said Tuesday that the new site is set to produce its Swedish Match North America unit's ZYN pouches, driving an expected annual economic impact of $550 million.

On top of 500 direct jobs, the new facility is expected to create 1,000 indirect jobs in Colorado, the company said.

Philip Morris aims to break ground later this year and get preliminary operations up at the end of next year, with regular production slated for 2026. Construction of the site is projected to create nearly 5,000 building jobs with an anticipated average annual salary of around $90,000.

The tobacco company, which has distributed Marlboro cigarettes overseas since its spinoff from domestic Marlboro seller Altria Group in 2008, reentered the U.S. market in 2022 with its acquisition of Swedish Match. Sales of the business' Zyn pouches have been skyrocketing over the past 18 months.
