NAGASE & CO., LTD. (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and President: Kenji Asakura) entered into a distribution agreement in May 2022 for the Uncountable data management platform for materials development, developed and provided by Uncountable Inc. (California, US), and has begun distribution inside Japan.

Recently, the field of materials research and development has been giving significant attention to materials informatics (MI), which uses AI and advanced data processing technology to search for new materials using machine learning to predict formulas and physical properties. In order to develop a machine learning model with high precision for MI, it is vital to collect the details and results of many experiments as digital data. Collecting this data will help with continual development of R&D themes, increasing the efficiency of consulting data, and accelerating team collaboration. However, data management methods are an issue for many materials manufacturers in Japan, who still record their experimental notes on paper, and there is an urgent need to create a foundation for sharing data.

The Uncountable platform developed and provided by Uncountable Inc. is a data management platform, combining electronic lab notebook (ELN) functions, to save and collect experimental data for materials research, with experiment point (formulation recipes) suggestion functions based on data analysis and a machine learning model. In addition to creating a cycle of proposing experiment plans based on the data gathered with the ELN function, collecting new experimental data, and analyzing that data, by managing all information such as experiment data, instructions, and reports using Uncountable, the sharing of information between researchers is also encouraged. Some companies in Japan are already using the platform, or looking into using it.

NAGASE will distribute Uncountable to materials manufacturers in Japan, proposing a system for customers to manage data for their R&D processes, as well as carrying out comprehensive support for MI in R&D, including with the TABRASATM SaaS new materials search platform developed and provided by NAGASE.
