Within the framework of large-scale efforts to improve safety of mining operations with diesel load-haul dumpers across the mines of MMC Norilsk Nickel Polar Division, the Company made a decision to outfit the entire fleet of LHDs with mobile proximity sensors.

The newly installed devices will inform the drivers with light and sound signals of hazardous proximity to miners. Special antennae can detect the number of people as well as their position in relation to the LHD within a 100 meter range.

The equipment has been fully procured and is currently undergoing installation on the entire fleet.

Besides the substantial safety benefits, the new equipment will enable data collection from onboard controllers, which can be wirelessly transmitted to the unified mine network, where operational parameters will undergo analysis and maintenance will be planned.

The installation phase is scheduled for completion in Q1 2016 with approximately RUB 50 million earmarked for the project. The devices will be mounted in over 500 LHDs.
