Microsoft Corporation announced unaudited earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended December 31, 2015. For the quarter, the company reported revenue was $23,796 million against $26,470 million for the same period a year ago. Operating income was $6,026 million against $7,776 million for the same period a year ago. Income before income taxes was $5,855 million $7,850 million for the same period a year ago. Net income was $4,998 million against $5,863 million for the same period a year ago. Diluted earnings per share were $0.62 against $0.71 for the same period a year ago. Net cash from operations was $5,598 million against $4,340 million for the same period a year ago. Non-GAAP operating revenue was $25,693 million against $26,144 million for the same period a year ago. Non-GAAP operating income was $7,923 million against $7,693 million for the same period a year ago. Non-GAAP net income was $6,275 million against $5,790 million for the same period a year ago. Non-GAAP earnings per share were $0.78 against $0.70 for the same period a year ago. Additions to property and equipment were $2,024 million against $1,490 million a year ago.
For the six months, the company reported revenue was $44,175 million against $49,671 million for the same period a year ago. Operating income was $11,819 million against $13,620 million for the same period a year ago. Income before income taxes was $11,368 million against $13,746 million for the same period a year ago. Net income was $9,618 million against $10,403 million for the same period a year ago. Diluted earnings per share were $1.20 against $1.25 for the same period a year ago. Net cash from operations was $14,192 million against $12,694 million for the same period a year ago. Additions to property and equipment were $3,380 million against $2,772 million a year ago.
Microsoft Corporation is the world's leader in the design, development and marketing of operating systems and software programs for PC's and servers. The group also builds and sells computer equipment. Net sales break down by activity as follows:
- sale of operating systems and application development tools (47.9%): primarily for servers (Azure, SQL Server, Windows Server, Visual Studio, System Center, GitHub, etc.) and (Windows);
- development of cloud-based software applications (23%): programs for productivity (Microsoft 365; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher and Access), integrated management and customer relationship management (Dynamics 365), online file sharing and management (OneDrive), and unified and collaborative communications (Skype and Microsoft Teams);
- sale of video gaming hardware and software (7.3%) : mainly Xbox;
- enterprise services (3.6%);
- sale of computers, tablets and accessories (2.6%);
- other (15.6%).
The United States accounts for 50.4% of net sales.
