Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging and Starbucks are teaming up to install electric-vehicle chargers at over 100 stores of the coffee chain across the U.S.

The partnership's first phase will involve the installation of 400 kW charging stations at Starbucks locations along Interstate 5, which runs from Canada to Mexico, the companies said on Wednesday.

The cost of the initiative wasn't disclosed. Mercedes-Benz and Starbucks also plan to focus on markets that include urban areas, charging deserts and important travel corridors.

Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging is a joint venture between subsidiaries of Mercedes-Benz Group AG and MN8 Energy LLC.

Mercedes-Benz and Starbucks both said the partnership is in line with their sustainability goals. Starbucks plans to cut carbon emissions 50% by 2030, and Mercedes-Benz is developing a charging network open to all brands as part of its initiative to become carbon neutral by 2039.

Mercedes-Benz said it has invested $1 billion into its charging network and has built a dozen locations across the southern U.S. since the opening of its first site in November. The company plans to expand to almost half the states in the U.S. in the next 12 to 18 months.
