Hitachi announced that the new entity, known as Hitachi Nuclear Energy Europe, will lead the company's work in a proposed joint venture with Bechtel Management Company and JGC. Once established, the new JV will serve as a Tier-1 contractor to the project developer Horizon Nuclear Power. Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy, which has a front end engineering and design contract with Horizon Nuclear Power for about three years, will continue to offer design for the plant, and operate under contract to the Tier 1 team.

The Wylfa Newydd project will include the development of two UK Advanced Boiling Water Reactors on site, which will generate about 2.7GW of energy. The low-carbon energy produced is expected to help power nearly five million British households. Construction work is expected to begin in 2019, following required permissions and commercial arrangements.

The project is scheduled to be operational by the first half of the 2020s.
