The company said it was taking several actions to cut costs, including plant closures that would result in 1,100 workers losing their jobs.

Harley said its net income fell 58 percent to $77.8 million, or 34 cents a share, from $186.1 million, or 78 cents a share, a year earlier.

Sales fell 6.8 percent to $1.29 billion.
