Chris Griffith is pleased to announce the appointment of Richard Butcher as the Group's Chief Technical Officer, a position that took effect from 1 January 2022.

The Chief Technical Officer (CTO) is the accountable executive within Gold Fields to provide leading levels of technical excellence and assurance, project delivery and asset optimisation to the Executive and Board of Directors. This role ensures that all Group technical disciplines are optimised, standardised, and leveraged in a manner that delivers benefits across Gold Fields assets, operations and projects. A key focus of this new role will be driving and supporting asset optimisation, a fundamental pillar of our strategy and integral to the achievement of our vision and purpose. The CTO role replaces Richard's EVP: Technical role, with the change implying an executive leadership role rather an advisory role. In this role, Richard will still report to Chris Griffith - the exact workings of the role and the interaction with the regions will be crystalised in the Operating Model project which we plan to have concluded early in 2022.

Richard is a professional Mining Engineer holding an MSc from the University of Witwatersrand as well as a Graduate Diploma in Mineral Economics among other relevant qualifications. He has gained unparalleled experience and expertise over 40 years in the mining industry across the globe in multi commodities in both the technical and operational spheres. Richard has also held a number of senior executive and Board positions in many leading gold companies.

He is passionate about developing solutions to complex problems through the empowerment of people, with a strong focus on operational delivery. He is keenly orientated to a modern workplace and has been leading this transformation at Gold Fields through the Modernisation programme.

He will continue to collaborate with regional heads to ensure that our technical function is at the forefront of implementing our new company strategy in a safe and sustainable manner.
