SÃO CAETANO DO SUL - General Motors will add a third shift at the Gravataí Industrial Complex, in the South of Brazil, where the small cars Chevrolet Celta and Onix are produced. This will impact in the opening of 1,450 new jobs at the GM plant and another 1,000 at the suppliers plants located at the same facility. Other 180 jobs will be created in the new powertrain plant in Joinville.
"The market success of the all-new Chevrolet Onix, launched last year in October, and the start of production of another new small sedan, to be launched in late February, led us to take the decision to add a third shift and open 2,450 new jobs at the Gravataí Industrial Complex", said Jaime Ardila, president GM South America. "We launched 9 all-new Chevrolet models in the last 15 months in the Brazilian market and are poised for growth", added Ardila.
GM consolidated last year an investment plan of USD 3 billion in Brazil, mostly to develop and launch new products to renew the Chevrolet portfolio, but also to update and add capacity to its plants.
As part of the plan, GM invested USD 1 billion at the Onix project, to develop the new small car family and to expand capacity from 230,000 to 380,000 vehicles per year at the Gravataí plant.
Other USD 200,000 were invested to build a new engine and cylinder heads plant at Joinville, State of Santa Catarina, which just started production and is about to be inaugurated in late February.
