Sustainability and great design pay off at UDIA Victoria awards

  • Environmentally ground-breaking community wins two awards
  • Frasers Property Sustainability Advisor named Young Professional of the Year

MELBOURNE, 14 DECEMBER 2022

The Frasers Property Australia team has won three major awards at the Urban Development Institute of Australia's Victorian Awards for Excellence.

Architect and environmental designer Kate Nason was named Young Professional of the Year for her work on biodiversity, high-performance buildings, and with the Australian Passive House Association, while Burwood Brickworks brought home two awards.

With a passion for reducing the carbon footprint of our cities, Kate was recognised for her work leading Frasers Property Australia's biodiversity strategy and the company's Passive House pilot monitoring program, as well as her efforts in helping Frasers Property achieve its corporate sustainability targets, including Net Zero by 2028 and a 5-star minimum Green Star rating on current and future developments.

Although Kate has only been with Frasers Property since 2021, she's already had a major impact thanks to her innovative thinking and burning desire to make a difference.

"I'm proud to be part of an organisation that recognises and is willing to step up to the challenges the world is facing," Kate said. "This award is a tremendous honour and a testament to the importance of this work."

Frasers Property's environmental credentials were further confirmed with its ground-breaking Burwood Brickworks community taking home two awards on the day - in the Medium Density Development and Design Excellence categories. The community was also a finalist in the Environmental Excellence and Masterplanned Development categories.

Frasers Property set itself high standards in pushing the environmental envelope at Burwood Brickworks, while delivering a uniquely diverse housing mix of large townhomes at price points typically unavailable within middle-ring suburbs, as well as a wide range of apartment options. Townhomes ranged from one to five bedrooms, while apartments offered one- and two-bedroom designs.

Architectural forms and streetscapes at Burwood Brickworks create a contemporary urban village, that is both respectful of and informed by the surrounding neighbourhood. Individual lots have been designed to maximise the precinct's north-facing orientation, with many yards and living spaces orientated accordingly.

More than 50% of homes were designed to meet Silver Level Liveable Housing Australia Design Guidelines and 7 Star NatHERS rating. All homes are within 400m of parkland and open space, with the newly-opened Village Green providing an anchoring centrepiece for play and recreation.

The project's retail, dining and entertainment precinct is recognised as the world's most sustainable shopping centre, having achieved Living Building Challenge® (LBC®) Petal Certification. The LBC® is administered by The International Living Future Institute and is recognised to be the most advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment.

The precinct's Urban Plaza with its alcoves and grassy mounds connects directly through to the Village Green park and playground via The Link, a green-fringed network of walking and cycling paths.

Sarah Bloom, General Manager Development Victoria for Frasers Property Australia, said the UDIA awards were the icing on the cake for Burwood Brickworks, which has recently sold out of all homes and apartments.

"With the opening of the Village Green, the topping out of the Ardent and Terrace Collection apartments and the imminent arrival of more residents, the final pieces of the Burwood Brickworks puzzle are slotting into
