Fingerprint Cards (FPC) will demonstrate its new touch fingerprint sensor during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona March 2-5. FPC1145 is so thin that it can be placed on the side of a mobile phone.

FPC1145 is the smallest touch fingerprint sensor brought forward by FPC to date. Touch fingerprint sensors are now being integrated into new devices by leading smartphone OEMs by either placing the sensor on the back side of the phone, or by placing the sensor on the front of the phone as a home button.

Thanks to its thin design and size, FPC1145 introduces new ways of integrating a touch fingerprint sensor by allowing it to instead be placed on the side of a phone. This enables an industrial design of the phone where no new buttons need to be introduced on the front or the back of the phone, but still allowing for a touch fingerprint sensor to be integrated in the device for secure and convenient user verification for mobile payments and other services.

Besides its core functions as a touch fingerprint sensor, FPC1145 can also host other functions normally using dedicated buttons on the side of the phone, such as a power button or a volume control button. As with all touch fingerprint sensors from FPC, FPC1145 provides leading biometric performance and full 360 degrees rotation support.

FPC1145 will be ready for mass production during Q2 2015. During the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, FPC will showcase a reference implementation of FPC1145 integrated in a smartphone as a side button.

Jörgen Lantto, acting President and Chief Executive Officer of FPC, comments: "Until today the integration of touch fingerprint sensors in a phone has required the introduction of new buttons, either on the front or on the back. With FPC1145 we are first to introduce a third option, reducing the impact on the industrial design when integrating a fingerprint sensor on the phone, while maintaining the convenience of secure user verification with a single touch."
