A new twist in the power struggle surrounding the Antwerp tanker company Euronav. There is speculation of a takeover bid by CMB, the shipping group of the Saverys family, also the founders of Euronav.

In the news: CMB (Compagnie Maritime Belge) is reportedly seeking financing to take over Euronav. This was reported by the stock market blog Betaville on Thursday afternoon. Betaville relies on anonymous sources and labels the reporting itself as a rumor.

More context: CMB is owned by Saverco, or the Saverys family. The family currently holds about a 23 percent stake in Euronav, according to the shipping company's website.

  • Euronav declined to comment on the rumors to Bloomberg news agency.
  • Euronav shares rose more than 7 percent earlier in the day before the FSMA suspended trading in the stock pending a press release.

What preceded: It came to a clash over Euronav earlier this year between the Saverys clan and Norwegian tycoon John Fredriksen. That seemed to culminate in some sort of armed peace, with both blocs standing their ground.
